"Loot," a farce by British playwright Joe Orton lampooning "improper" behavior among the proper English middle class, hits the stage at the Westport Country Playhouse tonight (Tuesday, July 16) through Aug. 3.

The play, which won the Evening Standard Award for best play in 1967, is "one of the most amazing comedies ever written," Mark Lamos, the playhouse artistic director, said in a news release. "Its continuing popularity is a testament to the undimmed brilliance of a young writer whose comedies of unruly bad manners rivaled those of the greatest English masters, including Oscar Wilde, George Bernard Shaw and Noel Coward."

Set in mid-1960s London, "Loot" is the story of two young thieves, Dennis, who works for an undertaker, and Hal, whose mother has just died. They rob the bank next door to the funeral home and hide the loot in the mother's coffin. Her displaced body keeps re-appearing at inopportune times. When Inspector Truscott turns up, events turn frantic.

The "Loot" cast includes John Horton as McLeavy; David Manis as Truscott; Devin Norik as Hal; William Peden as Meadows; Liv Rooth as Fay, and Zach Wegner as Dennis.

David Kennedy, the director of "Loot," has also directed Westport Country Playhouse productions of "Tartuffe," "Suddenly Last Summer," "Beyond Therapy" and "Dinner with Friends," since joining the playhouse as associate artistic director in 2009. He previously worked with the Dallas Theater Center, where he directed "The Misanthrope," "Glengarry Glen Ross," "Moonlight and Magnolias" and "I Am My Own Wife," among others. He was a founding artistic director of the Lunar Society in Toronto and Milkman Theatre Group in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and was artistic director of the Summer Cabaret in New Haven.

During its Westport run, "Loot" will be performed at 8 p.m. Tuesdays, at 2 and 8 p.m. Wednesdays, at 8 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays, at 3 and 8 p.m. Saturdays, and at 3 p.m. Sundays.

Tickets start at $30. Educators and students are eligible for 50 percent discounts. On the day of a performance, senior rush tickets are available at 50 percent off.
