Fourth-grade students from Long Lots Elementary School in Westport recently donated hundreds of books they collected to Norwalk Hospital for children in the pediatrics department as well as those being treated in the emergency room.

The donation is part of the Norwalk Hospital Foundation's Children Helping Children program. "The Children Helping Children program encourages children to give back throughout the year by donating, volunteering and organizing charity events to benefit the young children at Norwalk Hospital for medical care and treatment," Roseanne Shegirian, annual giving manager at the foundation, said in a statement.

Understanding that being in the hospital can get boring for children, fourth-grader Summer Hutchison "hopes to make their hospital stay more exciting with the books." Classmate Sophie Morrison added, "The entire class was excited to donate books, collecting hundreds of books in just one week. We want the children to feel the joy and pleasure of getting presents."
