Lifeguard coverage at the town's public beaches will be scaled back as of this week as the summer season wanes.

The Parks and Recreation Department has announced that, as of Monday, waterfront staffing will be reduced as it is each summer since many of the lifeguards are college students heading back to school.

Dan DeVito, the department's operations supervisor, said Burying Hill Beach will not have lifeguards on duty during the week, but will be staffed on the weekends through Labor Day.

Compo Beach will have lifeguards on duty during the week through Labor Day, he added.
