On Saturday, May 9, Homes with Hope was overwhelmed by the enormous quantity of food that 27 Westport postal carriers delivered to our food pantry located at the Gillespie Center/Hoskins' Place.

In preparation of the food collection that supported our pantry, as well as the Westport Woman's Club and the Weston Food Closet, volunteers generously offered their time by preparing 10,000 grocery bags with labels and postcards which the carriers delivered to every residence on their route earlier in the week. In hopes that the drive would yield a large quantity of food, more than the pantry could possibly store, we rented a POD that was stationed in the parking lot. Volunteers were willing and ready to help unload the carriers' trucks loaded with grocery bags as they pulled into the lot and by 5 p.m. the POD was full.

According to the post office, the carriers collected 15,000 pounds of bagged food, the most successful food drive to date.

Homes with Hope would like to extend our deepest appreciation to Dominick Solano, union steward; Kevin Hogan, postmaster; Sergio Aguilar, mail handler, and the 27 Westport carriers for going above and beyond and for their dedication and support of those most in need in our community. And, to the incredible Westport and Weston communities, Homes with Hope is so grateful for their overwhelming generosity.

Every August, the food pantry shelves are empty as many of Homes with Hope's donors go on vacation, but this year, the area's neediest can rest assured that when August comes there will still be food on the shelves.
