I support Helen Garten for first selectman. I have heard Helen and her running mate Melissa Kane, speaking at the library and at town hall, and I feel they are the right choice for Westport. I am impressed by their sincerity and dedication. Running the town would be the full-time focus of both Helen and Melissa.

I've spent my entire life -- 15 years -- in this town, benefiting from the schools, beaches, library and sports fields. These amenities are due to a commitment on the part of officials like Helen Garten. Sitting on the Board of Finance during the recession and maintaining the level of schools that Westport still has is evidence of Helen's commitment to education. Melissa's support of recycling and the library are important priorities for us today, but also for the future. The decisions that are made today will impact the town in years to come, when a lot of us, still students now, may be thinking of returning to Westport.

I was surprised to read that Helen and Melissa's competition have someone writing letters to the newspapers on behalf of supporters. The gentleman who "coordinates letter writing" for the opposition, says he writes the letters because "some people have less letter-writing skills." Personally, I think that letters, actually written by supporters would be most convincing, regardless of writing skills, because those are most genuine. Like Helen Garten and Melissa Kane, genuine.
