Helen Garten is an amazing person. I first met her in 2003 when she was elected to the RTM. She undertook difficult assignments that involved understanding and explaining very complex subjects, like the property-revaluation process. When she had to present her findings, she did it with a clarity that left us in awe. No beating around the bush, no hemming or hawing, just direct answers.
Had she remained on the RTM, I am confident Helen would have assumed leadership responsibilities. Instead, she was twice elected to the Board of Finance, where she has been a real leader -- as a member, chairman and vice chairman -- keeping the board focused and on target.
If we want a first selectman who knows how Westport works and who can make it work better, vote for Helen Garten on Nov. 5. She would be an excellent first selectman
