Letter: Help state's future, vote Rubin

As often happens in local elections there are two candidates that are both outstanding, well qualified citizens of the town, both have records of service, both are well known, well liked and personable. For Independent minded voters, the decision of who to vote for usually comes down to the voting records of the candidates, their values, priorities and how well they represented your interests.
In this case I am supporting Steve Rubin for State Representative in the 136th District, as I believe he will better represent the interests of Westporters, and the record shows this to be true.
Steve has a long history of serving our town and its many civic and charitable organizations. Steve is a strong fiscal conservative who has voted for responsible town spending and budgeting year after year. He understands that our State is heading for fiscal disaster and that our current governor and his Democrat majority supporters in the legislature have made a bad situation even worse through their misguided policies and actions.
Steve's opponent in his voting record has supported our unpopular governor and his misguided policies 98 percent of the time. Connecticut is the worst state in almost every important financial metric: heaviest combined tax burden, highest per capita debt, most unfriendly for business, worst state to retire in.
And what has the Democratic majority in the legislature done about it in the last session? Mostly doubled down and made things worse: increased spending by 7 percent, earning a credit downgrade; voted highest retroactive tax increase in state history; created more than 70 new taxes; ended the fiscal year hundreds of millions in deficit and enacted a bill giving $600 to $1,400 to those who had not paid an income tax.
Steve Rubin will work to reverse these ruinous policies and help run the State more like we run the Town of Westport. Help yourself and help your state's future by voting for Steve Rubin.
