I strongly support Brian Stern for re-election to the Board of Finance. He has a strong background in finance as a senior executive of Xerox Corp., has been on the Board of Finance for four years and a resident of Westport for 38 years.
As chairman of the audit committee, he brought financial discipline to the town's finances. While on the board, he helped to keep tax increases below 2 percent.
I know that Brian wants to invest in Westport. We have been through a period of austerity, caused by the recession, but time has come to move forward. Interest rates are low, our credit rating is good and our tax base is growing.
We need to preserve our excellent educational system, improve our amenities for our families in Westport (the beach, Longshore Park and the library), and build services for our senior citizens since our town demographics are rapidly changing. Of course, we all know we desperately need real downtown improvements.
I believe that Brian Stern will continue to contribute to what makes Westport a great place to live and prosper.
