Letter: Chamber still backs downtown study

On behalf of the board of directors of the Westport-Weston Chamber of Commerce, I am writing to support the important work of the Downtown 2020 Committee. The chamber and its members feel that what the committee hopes to do is critical to the long term vibrancy and well-being of our community.
To this end, the chamber has committed $10,000 of its funds to help with the hiring of experts in urban design, parking, traffic flow, public spaces, pedestrian safety, and municipal infrastructure enhancements, all of which must be studied to successfully plan Westport's future.
With so many large projects on the drawing boards (Bedford Square, Levitt Pavilion, library, movie theater, Baron's South, National Hall, Save the Children and more), the immediate need for the planning, cooperation and coordination of the new development with existing businesses is critical.
If the town is going to have a say in ensuring that our community has the best traffic flow, adequate parking, pedestrian safety, improved flood control measures, more public spaces and a beautiful streetscape, we believe the Downtown 2020 Committee's work is important and deserving of our financial support.

EDITOR'S NOTE: The chamber pledged funding for the proposed study last fall.
