We moved to Westport in the fall of 1948. I was not yet five years old and started kindergarten at Bedford Elementary School in what is now one of the basement offices of our town hall. I must admit that each time I pay my taxes, it causes a wave of nostalgia. That school was my first exposure to one of Westport's many contributions that helped shape my life.

The building has morphed into Westport Town Hall, the heartbeat of our town's government, and has had many of the upgrades that make it efficient and effective in that important role. But two years ago, the building's landscaping was a little long in the tooth.

Enter lifetime Westporter Anthony Palmer, who stepped up. Tony, to all who know him, is a keeper of the landscaping tradition in the Palmer family. He and his team at T. Palmer Landscaping donated both plant materials and labor to bring town hall up to the standard one would expect in a town like ours. And he did it as a gift. Guess he feels, as I do, that we all have an active role in our town's future.

So here's a somewhat belated thank you to a son of Westport whose heart is in the right place. We should all follow his example.

Thanks Tony.

John Brandt
