November is National Hospice Month and I want to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the professional staff and volunteers who provide hospice care at Visiting Nurse & Hospice of Fairfield County.

This nonprofit agency has served patients and families in Fairfield County for more than 100 years and was recently named one of the top home-health agencies in the United States for 2014 by HomeCare Elite. The compassion and skill that these caretakers demonstrate on a daily basis is unsurpassed. They provide comfort at a time when that is what is needed most.

In a recent study conducted by the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization it was reported that the number of patients served by hospice has steadily increased over the past several years and that more than 1.5 million Americans received hospice care in 2013. Hospice has become a source of constancy in end-of-life care in this country and that is due in great part to the quality of care that patients and families receive.

Thank you to the wonderful nurses, aides, therapists, social workers, volunteers and others at Visiting Nurse & Hospice of Fairfield County who provide such an invaluable service to our communities.
