Lemon Bread

1/2 cup butter

1 cup sugar

1 large lemon

2 eggs, beaten

1 1/2 cups all purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup milk

1/2 cup nuts, chopped (optional)

1/4 cup confectionery sugar

Cream together butter and sugar until fluffy. Grate peel from lemon and add to creamed mixture. Squeeze juice from lemon; set aside. Add eggs, flour, baking powder, salt and milk to creamed mixture, blend well. Stir in nuts. Turn batter into a six-cup mold (or a greased and floured loaf pan). Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Bake for one hour. Mix together lemon juice and confectionery sugar. Pour over hot loaf and allow syrup to sink in. Turn loaf out onto a wire rack and cool. Serve with fresh whipped cream.
