Japan Society of Fairfield County is offering a free, introductory lecture on the Zen school of Buddhism on Saturday afternoon, June 1 at the Westport Library. The program is planned from 2 to 4:30 p.m. in the McManus Room.

The American monk Zuiho Matthew Perez will present the lecture and lead a meditation practice, followed by a discussion, the Japan Society said.

Registration is required by Tuesday, May 28, the society said. The program is intended to give participants a understanding of Japanese arts and culture, sponsors said in a news release.

Perez is the resident monk at New York Zendo Shobo-ji, a Rinzai Zen temple in Manhattan, N.Y., according to the release. He was ordained in 2009 at Dai Bosatsu Zendo in Livingston Manor, N.Y., and trained there for two years. He has also practiced at monasteries and temples in Japan and Seattle.

To register for the program, email Harry Sakamaki at Sakamaki0624@gmail.com by May 28 or call him at 203-912-3757. For more information on the Japan Society of Fairfield County, visit www.japansocietyfc.org. For more information on the Japan Society of Fairfield County, visit www.japansocietyfc.org.
