A service and social gathering is planned Saturday at Compo Beach by the Congregation for Humanistic Judaism.

The event begins at 6 p.m. with socializing and, as the sun sets, followed by Havdalah, the concluding observance of Shabbat, the Jewish day of rest, according to the congregation.

The traditional symbols of wine, braided candle and spice box will be used in the brief ceremony.

The congregation’s annual membership event is open to the public. Prospective members, current members and guests are invited to attend, organizers say. Guests are asked to pack their own picnic dinner and supplies. The congregation will provide dessert.

Those planning to attend are asked to call 203-293-8867 or email info@humanisticjews.org. Mention the Havdalah event at the gate for a temporary parking pass. The event will take place under a CHJ banner on the beach.
