Sunny skies Friday spotlighted an array of discounted merchandise spilling onto downtown sidewalks — fertile ground for crowds shopping for hot bargains and specialty goods.

It was a bright start to the three-day annual Sidewalk Sales event sponsored by the Westport Downtown Merchants Association.

Lucretia Cefola said she happened to be passing by downtown when she spotted all the sale merchandise and couldn’t resist. She was one of the many shoppers making their way from merchant tent to tent Friday, searching out deals.

In Cefola’s bag sporting the Vinyard Vines logo were three pairs of white shorts she said she was lucky to grab. “You can never have enough of white ones,” said Cefola, a Wilton resident.

Carol Haber and her daughter were also checking out the sales. “A woman just likes to shop,” said Haber, who added she’s been coming to the sidewalk sales event for several years.

“We’re doing super,” said Liz Alletzhauser, offering free samples outside David’s Tea. “We have lots of deals here today.”

Michelle Sloan of Shoe-Inn said business was brisk at her store. “I’ve been selling lots of shoes and handbags,” she added. “We’re getting a mix of regular customers and those looking for bargains.”

At LF Stores, Sarah Digby said they were doing great. “It’s a nice day and lots of people have come out to shop,” she said. “Plus, they’re having fun.”

The Downtown Merchants Association website says, “Each year, savvy shoppers eagerly await this amazing sale throughout” not only Main Street, but also on the Post Road and areas surrounding downtown.

The sidewalk sales run through Sunday.
