A vintage horse barn at 34 Hyde Lane in the Hunt Club section of Westport might have met the wrecking ball were it not for the vision of a carpet and textile designer who recognized its possibilities and the architectural potential to marry past and present in one sophisticated space.

The antique Joseph Hyde Barn, built in the late 1700s, was remodeled to create a residence in the 1970s using the shell of that original barn, but it had fallen into disrepair. It might have been easier to raze it and replace it with new construction, but its current owners, including the designer, wanted to preserve its history and uniqueness.

In 2007, the 18th-century barn was gutted down to the studs and completely rebuilt into a contemporary-style house with an upgraded foundation and framing, and a modern wing was added. The original hayloft was preserved and serves as a loft room looking over the spacious living room.

Now it's someone else's turn to appreciate this minimalistic gem of a modern home, which features a wealth of amenities from its indoor climate-controlled squash court with cork floor to its radiant-heated floors in several rooms; from its English ivy-covered pergola to its heated outdoor bluestone patio; from its cavernous Provence-inspired gourmet kitchen to its second floor office with reception area.

This house enjoys much privacy. It is set well back from the street hidden behind another home with which it shared a paved, Belgian block-lined driveway.

The architecture masterfully combines reclaimed wood, stone and metal. The exterior center of the house is bisected by a metal silo, which houses the modern, circular interior staircase, which looks like an art installation, and the silo separates the old barn from the new wing. The exterior façade is natural wood vertical siding.

This converted barn house has 7,969 square feet of living space and it sits on a professionally landscaped, level property of just over one acre.

The living room has a coffered ceiling of exposed, reclaimed beams. There are French doors to the bluestone patio and the enclosed backyard. The perimeter of the patio has a milled stone wall. Above the oversized brick fireplace is space for a flat screen television hidden behind sliding barn doors.

On the western end of the living room is access to a three-room guest or au pair suite, which has a full bath and a separate entrance.

In the kitchen there is a raised fireplace, a sizable center island topped in a six-inch thick slab of marble with a breakfast bar to seat four. Serious foodies will not want to leave this kitchen. It has a dual fuel AGA range with six burners and four separate oven doors. There are two under-counter Sub-Zero refrigerator/freezer drawers and a Perlick wine/beverage refrigerator.

Entertaining is easy in this house, not just because of the layout, but because clean-up is a breeze with its two dishwashers, a Fisher and Paykell and a Thermador. There is also a Thermador stainless refrigerator and freezer.

The squash court, which also has a basketball hoop, is on the first floor near the family room and mudroom.

On the second floor, the master bedroom has its own fireplace and balcony, and the master bath has wood floors except for the ceramic tile area for the free-standing soaking tub.

Horse lovers will be pleased to learn the house is within easy walking distance of the Westport Hunt Club, and Long Lots School is just down the street. The school grounds are home to the town's community garden.
