U.S. Rep. Jim Himes, D-4, visited the Westport Fire Department on Monday morning to discuss how a new generator will affect emergency headquarters.

Approximately $265,000 in federal funds will go towards replacing the generator. Some work has already begun on the project, which will provide several days of emergency power, but the bulk of the work has yet to begin.

"In his short time in office, Congressman Himes has already proved his dedication to supporting first responders. He is eager to hear our ideas and concerns and to provide assistance in his capacity as our Congressman and a member of the Homeland Security Committee," said Chris Ackley, Westport Fire Chief, in a press release. "Congressman Himes understands that public safety and protection are not just local but regional and national issues for which we must be prepared, and we appreciate his willingness to help tackle the challenges first responders face."

Firefighters on call work out of the building. Also, the emergency operations center as well as units from the Fairfield County hazardous materials response team are housed there.

"It is critical that we maintain top-of-the line emergency planning, response, and communications programs in order to keep us safe and secure," Himes said in a press release "These men and women are on the front lines, protecting us when we need it most. I appreciate the time they spent today educating me about what I can do at the federal level to assist them in their efforts."
