Main Street and stores along the downtown thoroughfare have reopened after the area was closed off more than an hour this morning by a gas leak caused by construction crews.

The incident took place shortly before 10:30 a.m. during work on upgrades planned on downtown infrastructure.

After a heavy gas odor was detected, officials ordered a ban on all vehicle and pedestrian traffic, as well as the evacuation of stores along Main Street between its intersection with the Post Road and Elm Street. Parker-Harding Plaza also was closed to traffic.

Fire and police personnel were dispatched to the scene while crews from the Southern Connecticut Gas Co. repaired the broken gas main.

Full access to the area was allowed again shortly after 11:30 a.m.
