The Westport Republican Town Committee is accepting applications from registered Republicans interested in filling the Board of Education seat vacated by James Marpe.

Marpe has announced his resignation from the school board to campaign for first selectman, a post to be filled in the November 2013 town election.

The committee will recommend a Republican to replace Marpe, but the Board of Education must approve the appointment. The person appointed would serve out Marpe's term, which expires in November 2013.

The RTC has named a subcommittee to interview qualified candidates and make a recommendation, the RTC said in a news release. The panel -- the Board of Education Vacancy Committee -- is chaired by Karen Hess.

The RTC said Republicans interested in filling the vacancy should call Hess at 917-270-1337 or email her at karenchess@sbcglobal.net.

Candidates will be given a detailed questionnaire and should be prepared to discuss their skills and qualifications in an interview with

the vacancy committee, the RTC said.

Interviews will be scheduled the week of Nov. 26.
