Westport Republicans have named a local PTA veteran to run for Board of Education, filling a ballot spot that had been left vacant when the party nominated its town-election slate last month.

Karen Kleine, a former president of the Kings Highway Elementary School and Coleytown Middle School PTAs, was named to the ballot spot by the Republican Town Committee's Nomination Committee, the RTC announced.

She joins incumbent Republicans Michael McGovern and Jeannie Smith as the party's school board candidates. Kleine also served on the board of the Staples High School PTA, the Republicans said in a news release, and has volunteered with the Westport Library and Temple Israel.

Also on the November ballot for Board of Education will be incumbent Democrats Elaine Whitney, the board's chairman, and Brett Aranow.
