GFA roundup: Boys soccer out to 2-0 start

The Greens Farms Academy boys soccer team began the season with a 5-1 win over Cheshire Academy at home Sept. 13. Cheshire scored first just four minutes into the game to take the early lead, but GFA responded with a tying goal 10 minutes later to even the score going into halftime.
GFA came out of the break and put together three quick goals to hold a 4-1 lead before a weather delay, and put in the final goal after the delay. Junior goalkeeper Henry Holzinger led the GFA defense with senior captain Rocco Babun, junior James Velgot and junior Steffen Refvik (Westport). Senior Sunday Okeke scored in his first goal for GFA to go along with two goals apiece from junior Jake Sinnott and sophomore Zach Liston. Lew, senior Jack Moley and senior captain Michael Medvedev added assists on the scorecard.
Junior Nick Attai and sophomores Will McCall (Westport), Miles McDonald (Westport) and Ethan Phan (Bridgeport), along with freshman Ethan Lior (Fairfield) all contributed to GFA's first win of the season.
Last Saturday GFA defeated Trinity Pawling 2-0. Okeke opened the scoring after nine minutes from Medvedev's assist. Medvedev also assisted junior Ian Lee to give GFA a 2-0 halftime lead. Holzinger, Babun, Velgot, Refvik,Lew, and Colonna worked together to earn the shutout.
The Dragons lost their opening match to Sacred Heart 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-15). GFA had some moments, we were very quick to the ball and strong in long rallies. The Dragon's also served extremely well, being aggressive with very few errors.
The Dragons started their season with a 2-0 win Sept. 15 over FAA opponent Holy Child. The scoring came early for the Dragons, as senior Clare Mengel sent a ball through to junior Bella Litt, who placed it in to the opposite corner of net. Litt had the assist on the second goal from sophomore Ella Murphy. Sophomore Sarah Logan also played a role in the goal, as she, too, got her foot on the ball before the score. Senior captain goalkeeper Lexi Kimball had 22 saves.
Last Saturday the Dragons took on Ethel Walker School. Ethel Walker scored first off a direct kick and header. GFA sophomore Kelly Van Hoesen came into the game for the Dragons and scored, tying the game for a final score of 1-1.
GFA opened ITS season with an all-FAA meet last Wednesday at Sherwood Island in Westport. For the girls, freshmen Tia Farlow (Westport) and Kaitlin Reed finished their first high school 5K at times of 28:55 and 29:13 respectively.
The boys race was called in mid race due to extreme weather.
Last Saturday, Sept. 17, Wilton High School hosted the Wilton Invitational at Allen's Meadows Park. Senior Eva Scianna finished the 2.5-mile course in 22:29. For the boys 5k, junior Sean Minson was the first Dragon to cross the finish line with a time of 19:57. Freshman Charlie Bohnsack finished second for the Dragons with a time of 20:41.
