Demolition of the Westport Weston Family YMCA's former Weeks Pavilion complex downtown has begun.

Heavy equipment and workers in hard hats were at work on the Church Lane property Monday, and piles of rubble were visible behind fencing surrounding the site, bordered on one end by Main Street and the other by Elm Street.

The demolition is part of the Bedford Square multi-use development.

Although the Weeks Pavilion is being torn down, the commercial/residential complex will incorporate and renovate the former Bedford building and former firehouse into the new development.

In addition to 60,000 square feet of retail, restaurant and office space, the Bedford Square project will include 26 one- and two-bedroom apartments, as well as underground parking.

The overall project prompted the relocation of the historic, 1880s Queen Anne-style Gunn house across Elm Street to the town-owned Baldwin parking lot. The move, which took place last November, cleared the site for a segment of the Bedford plans.
