The town's annual fireworks display celebrating Independence Day, which had been scheduled for Thursday night over Compo Beach, has been rescheduled to Monday because of the threat of stormy weather.

With heavy rain, gusty winds and dangerous tides possible because of Tropical Storm Arthur, officials decided to call off the fireworks and move the event to Monday evening at Compo. The annual pyrotechnical display is co-sponsored by the Westport Police Athletic League and the Parks and Recreation Department.

The rescheduled fireworks will also likely force postponement of a parks and recreation hearing on recommended site improvements at Compo Beach, which had been scheduled Monday night.

But officials had indicated that if the fireworks were moved to Monday, they would reschedule the Compo hearing so the sky show did not cut into attendance for those who want to comment on the beach plans.
