A fire outside a Post Road East commercial building was quickly extinguished Saturday evening before causing serious damage to the structure.

The fire, reported about 6:15 p.m. Saturday, erupted outside the building that houses the Patio.com store at 645 Post Road East.

The first fire unit on the scene found flames on the structure's exterior, but it was doused quickly. Firefighters also checked the building interior to make sure the fire and smoke had not spread to the store's showroom, stock area or attic.

The Fire Marshal's office is investigating the cause of the fire. In a statement issued after the fire, Assistant Fire Chief John Plofkin Jr. reminded people to dispose of smoking materials in proper receptacles and not to throw them in wooded areas or near combustible items.

Four engine companies, a truck company and the shift commander were dispatched on the call, with a total of 16 firefighters.
