WESTPORT — The popular chain Donut Crazy is one step closer to hitting the Westport market after the Board of Finance unanimously approved its sublease located at 1 Ferry Lane on the eastbound side of the Saugatuck Railroad Station.

Under the proposed five year lease, Donut Crazy will pay a monthly rent to the town of $1,500 which increases annually and culminates at $1,689 per month in the final year of the lease. Donut Crazy has locations in Bridgeport, Shelton and Stratford.

Aimed at reaching commuters, the donut shop features a wide variety of donuts as well as breakfast sandwiches (some of which are on donut buns), coffee, juice among other offerings.

Board of Finance member John Hartwell questioned how the donut shop would prove financially stable given the density of similar commuter options at the station.

“I’m wondering how this is going to make money when there are already several places on the other side of the tracks that are already selling the same stuff,” Hartwell said.

Police Chief Foti Koskinas, who presented the lease, said that he believes the shop is a good investment for the town and will flourish.

“They are working and preparing to have an app that you can go on, coming off the train, where they will have prepared food ... so were hoping it will take off and work,” Koskinas said.

Brian Stern expressed his faith in the business ability to succeed.

“We want them to be successful there because if it’s successful it means that it’s providing a service to the commuters and that’s what we want,” Stern said. “As far as I’m concerned, I want this to be a success because it’s a win-win for the town and for the commuters and for this businessperson.”
