The Westport Police Athletic League's ice-skating rink at Longshore is set to glide into a new season this week with a newly expanded rink, extended weekend hours and an improved sound system.

The new season begins Friday with extended weekend hours for the public until 11 p.m., according to police Capt. Sam Arciola, the Westport PAL president.

He said the Staples High School ice hockey team will be playing four regular games this season at the rink, under the lights.

"We could not be more thrilled with all of these improvements" says Tony Lantier, owner of Thin Ice Management, the rink management company for Westport PAL. "We're happy to have kept our pricing unchanged for over 15 years, making skating at our rink an affordable and a fun family-friendly activity."

The Westport PAL rink at Longshore is open daily for public skating, and is also available for private parties, as well as open evening rentals for men's hockey groups.

Skate times are listed on its website -- www.wpalrink.com -- and will be open every day through March.

There are also discounts and offers available, including one free hour of skating from 6 to 7 p.m. this Friday and Saturday, on wpalrink on Instagram and Facebook. Weekly deals will also be posted on both Instagram and Facebook pages.

The Westport PAL rink at Longshore has been in operation 18 years, and was originally located in front of Splash Restaurant, said Arciola. The rink was donated to the Westport PAL by the Decaro family, owners of Splash restaurant.
