Exercise support for cancer charity at 'Sweat 4 Pink' events

Pink Aid will be holding its first spring fundraiser, "Sweat 4 Pink," during the month of May, supported by local gyms.
Pink Aid supports -- through grant awards -- programs that provide services for local women with breast cancer who lack insurance or have inadequate medical insurance, according to Susan Gersh, Pink Aid's community event coordinator.
In its fifth year, the organization has raised more than $1 million to date, including "$445,000 raised last year alone," Gersh said.
She said the "Sweat 4 Pink" fundraiser is a way to get the "whole community involved."
Gersh said local gyms are donating "their most exciting classes to the cause." Each class will cost $25 with the entire amount going to Pink Aid, she said.
Through Pink Aid, Gersh said they would like to "make Connecticut a more compassionate and humane" place for women not only struggling with breast cancer, but also dealing with issues in their daily lives.
Pink Aid was launched five years ago to help breast cancer patients with emergency and immediate needs. Some patients struggle to pay rent and utility bills and to put food on their families' tables, she said.
Pink Aid, she added, supports programs that provide services including free mammograms, wigs, recovery garments, food cards, transportation to treatment, help covering personal expenses and more. Grants aren't given only to local hospitals, but also to a number of grass-roots agencies, she said.
The organization also sponsors a fall fundraiser.
Sweat 4 Pink classes all cost $25.
