Earthplace recently received a $10,000 grant from the Fairfield County Community Foundation to put toward its Harbor Watch Water Quality Monitoring Program.
The grant will provide support for the program's environmental education opportunities for area high school and college students. It will also increase Harbor Watch's ability to identify sources of pollution, including producing elevated levels of indicator bacteria and nutrients, according to a news release.
For more than 25 years, the program has organized various projects to analyze water quality conditions in Fairfield County's rivers and harbors and gather data for local municipal departments and state and federal agencies. It has also taught students how to use field instrumentation, conduct laboratory analysis of water samples, evaluate data and present findings in a scientific format, the release states.
The Norwalk-based foundation, in compliance with the Council on Foundations' national standards for community foundations, has awarded over $135 million in grants to nonprofits in the county and beyond, the release states.
