ELIZABETH MILLS DUNBAR

Elizabeth (Betty) Mills Dunbar, 97, died March 5, 2010, at her home in Washington, D.C.

She was born Feb.18, 1913, in Syracuse, N.Y., the youngest child of Irving and Mary Broad.

After receiving her bachelor of arts and master's degree in English and education administration from Syracuse University, she became and administrator and eventually a dean at Northwestern University, Green Mountain College and Syracuse University.

She met and married Alexander Dunbar May 16, 1953, while he was studying business at Syracuse University. Following the wedding, she moved with him briefly to Glasgow, Scotland, his home, before returning to Syracuse. She moved to Westport in 1963, and was active as a volunteer for the schools, the United Methodist Church and the Red Cross, as well as a wonderful mother. She then became the administrator for the Fairfield County Visiting Nurses Association.

Dunbar moved to Washington, D.C., in 1995 to be closer to her daughter's family.

Her husband predeceased her on Feb. 18, 2000.

She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Dunbar and her son-in-law, Charles Cerf, and her grandchildren, Alexandra Cerf and Anna Cerf, all of Washington, D.C.

No service is planned; however, the family will be having a dinner celebration of her life April 3 in Westport. Contact her daughter at cedunbar@erols.com for more information.

Contributions may be made in her honor to the American Red Cross.
