A driver who police said aroused suspicion in the parking lots of the Saugatuck Railroad Station on Wednesday afternoon faces a series of criminal charges after he was taken into custody following a chase into Fairfield.

The incident began after 2 p.m. Wednesday when Officer David Scinto checked the registration for the vehicle, and found that the license plates did not match those listed for the vehicle. The officer followed the vehicle onto nearby Interstate 95, and stopped the car near northbound Exit 18.

But when he approached the car, the driver -- later identified as Nelson Rivera, 35, of East Main Street, Bridgeport -- sped off and pulled off the highway at Exit 19 in the Southport section of Fairfield.

As Rivera left I-95, he drove at both Scinto and Fairfield police units called to the scene, police said, narrowly missing their cruisers.

Rivera then continued speeding east down the busy Post Road in Fairfield before being stopped by multiple police units near the intersection of Post and Sasco Hill roads.

He was taken into custody and brought back to Westport police headquarters for booking on the following charges: criminal attempt on assault on an officer, interfering with an officer, possession of narcotics, possession of narcotics not in original container, disobeying the signal of an officer, reckless driving, operating a motor vehicle without insurance, failure to display license plates, misuse of registration plates and operating an unregistered vehicle.

Bond was set at $10,000 and Rivera is scheduled to appear June 11 at Norwalk Superior Court.
