Dr. Joseph J. Okon, 61, of Westport died May 6 at home.

Born in New York City, he was the son of the late Esther and Sol Okon. He attended Columbia University and earned a medical degree at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

He devoted his career to obtaining funding for the advancement of medical education. A lifelong philanthropist, he helped to provide a Jewish education to those in need and was a member of several boards of directors, including UJA Federation and Bi-Cultural Day School.

He was predeceased by a brother, Dr. Paul Okon.

He is survived by three sons, Benjamin, Ezra and Alexander Okon, all of Westport.
