Support is being sought for the "Back to School" program, sponsored for Westport families who need help with supplies or clothing for the new academic year.

The program will take place from Aug. 6 through 13, according to Barbara Butler, director of the town's Department of Human Services.

"This program offers new backpacks and school supplies as well as Athletic Shoe Factory and Payless gift cards to income-eligible families with children in Westport," Butler said in a press statement. The program "depends solely upon the generosity of community individuals and organizations," she said.

Last year, 213 Westport students from 109 income-eligible families received back-to-school supplies as well as Payless gift cards for a new pair of school shoes.

Donations of new school supplies of all types, including backpacks may be dropped off Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Room 200 of the Westport Town Hall, 110 Myrtle Ave.

"Donations at any level are greatly appreciated," Butler said.

The Department of Human Services also accepts tax-deductible monetary donations made payable to: Town of Westport/DHS Family Programs (memo: backpacks), and mailed to the Westport Department of Human Services, 110 Myrtle Ave., Westport, CT 06880.
