DANBURY - Three young children may have accidentally started the fire that engulfed a bedroom in their two-story townhouse Friday.

The fire at 52 Main St. started at 6:20 p.m. Fire officials said the children were home with their mother, who was cooking dinner in the kitchen on the first-floor of the wood frame building.

Assistant Fire Chief Jeff Tierney said the bedroom where the fire started was destroyed. The remainder of the second story was heavily damaged by heat and smoke. No one was injured in the blaze.

The local chapter of the American Red Cross is providing temporary housing for the family until their apartment is repaired.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and fire officials said they are interviewing the children, all believed to be under the age of 11.

"I believe it was accidental in nature, but I don't know what the final outcome was," Tierney said.

Attempts to reach the family and the American Red Cross were unsuccessful.
