Crosby Gardner Patterson, 97, of Verona Island, Maine, a former teacher at Bedford Junior High School in Westport, died April 11 at home.

Born Feb. 3, 1914, in Bangor, Maine, he was the son of the late Leander G. Patterson and Grace Hart Patterson. He was a graduate of Bangor High School and Higgins Classical Institute. He received a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Maine in journalism and English, as well as a master's degree in education several years later.

He taught history and social studies many years at Bedford Junior High School, known now as Bedford Middle School. He was also the publicity director for Gorham Raceway and Bangor Raceway, and had raced a number of horses.

Survivors include a daughter, Grace Patterson of Verona Island, and granddaughters Madeline and Carrie Daigle. Besides his parents, Patterson was predeceased by his wife, Helen Hopkins Patterson, and a sister, Marie Josephine Richardson.

There will be no funeral service at his request. Memorial donations may be made to the Bangor Public Library, 145 Harlow St., Bangor, ME 04401, or the Maine Harness Horsemen's Association. Arrangements were handled by the Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home in Bucksport, Maine.
