A New York man suspected of trying to shoplift merchandise Sunday at the CVS pharmacy on Post Road East was captured after police said he tried to run over an officer behind another store.
Akinola Ebanks, 26, of Bronx, N.Y., was charged with criminal attempted assault on an officer as well as a series of other offenses after he was taken into custody when CVS employees reported that he was trying to steal items from the pharmacy just before 10:30 a.m. Sunday.
He fled the store after being confronted by employees, police said, and discarded several pieces of merchandise that he had hidden under his clothes.
Officers on patrol, alerted to the incident, spotted Ebanks behind Home Goods on Post Road East a short time later. When approached by officers, Ebanks initially appeared to be cooperative, according to the report. But he then suddenly started his car and drove at an officer, causing the officer to leap out of the way to avoid being hit, police said.
Ebanks then sped to the lot of Super Stop & Shop, where he ditched the car and fled on foot. But he was captured by officers a short time later, according to the report.
Ebanks, in addition to being charged with criminal attempt to assault on a police officer, faces charges of fifth-degree criminal larceny attempt, fourth-degree larceny, interfering with an officer, reckless driving and engaging police in pursuit.
He was held on $25,000 bond.
