A jazz concert to welcome Rabbi Greg Wall as the spiritual leader of Beit Chaverim Synagogue of Westport/Norwalk will be held Saturday at Westport Town Hall. Rabbi Wall joined the congregation in August.

Wall, who has been called the "jazz rabbi," by the New York Times, will perform at 8:30 p.m. along with his longtime collaborators from New York's downtown music scene, the Ayn Sof Arkestra and Bigger Band, the Later Prophets, and Zion80.

The Ayn Sof Arkestra and Bigger Band, directed by Wall and Grammy Award-winning trumpeter Frank London, is a 15-piece big band performing original music. The group performed weekly in the East Village during the rabbi's tenure at the Sixth Street Community Synagogue.

The quartet Later Prophets has toured Europe, North America and Israel, and has released two CDs. Zion80 is a mixed marriage of the spiritual melodies of Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach and Nigerian Afro-Beat master Fela Kuti. The 12-piece ensemble headlined the world's largest Jewish culture festival in Krakow last summer.

Admission to the fundraising concert is $60. For ticket information, call 203-227-3333 or e-mail BeitChaverimSyn@optonline.net

The concert will be the first in a series of concerts showcasing Jewish culture through music and the fine arts.
