One of the most private and bucolic settings in Fairfield County has to be along Bernhard Drive in Weston, and nestled on a 2.27-acre property at the end of that quiet cul-de-sac is an 11-room colonial house at 31 Bernhard Drive. The current owners call this house and property a "four-season resort."

This is the ideal location for someone who appreciates nature. The property abuts the Aspectuck Land Trust open space "Crow Hill Nature Preserve" and Trout Brook Valley. It is quite near to the Saugatuck River and the Saugatuck Reservoir. The reservoir property also adjoins the nature conservatory.

Each spring, the reservoir and river are stocked with trout and fishing is permitted on the Weston side of the reservoir, however such leisure activities require a permit from Aquarion Water Company, which also allows hiking, cross-country skiing, snow-shoeing and birding.

On this residential property, there are 3,000 square feet of bluestone patio and terraces with a stone fire pit in the backyard providing ample opportunity to spend time outdoors and to enjoy the view. That view includes professional landscaping with thousands of spring bulbs, mixed perennial borders and many specimen plantings. The flower beds include a combination of planned "architectural" gardens and free-form spaces. The front garden design was published in the Gordon Hayward book "The Welcoming Garden." The garden potting shed has a planting porch, cupola, weathervane and electrical service.

Built in 1997, this house features 4,973 square feet of living space in the main floors. There is another 1,172 square feet in the finished lower level, which includes a custom stone wall with an electric fireplace, recessed Lutron lighting and custom cabinetry and bookshelves. The lighting and fireplace are remote control operated. Stereo speakers are located in the ceiling. The fireplace has a floor-to-ceiling chimney but it is strictly for atmosphere. There are two working fireplaces in the house -- a marble one in the formal living room and a red brick one with a white wood surround in the family room.

Also on this basement level is a 2,000-plus bottle climate-controlled wine cellar with a stone entrance, Malaysian mahogany hardwood racks and a slate floor.

On the first floor, a home office has custom wood blinds, custom molding and two telephone lines. The formal dining room has a chandelier and ceiling medallion. A first-floor powder room has a custom cabinet with hammered bronze sink and faucet and a Travertine marble floor.

The spacious gourmet kitchen has an eat-in area with five bay windows, granite counter tops, built-in desk and granite-topped center island. Appliances include a Sub-Zero refrigerator/freezer and a Dacor double oven and cooktop. The butler's pantry features a hand-painted custom mural, glass display cabinets, a cocktail sink and pocket doors.

There are four bedrooms on the second floor, including two that share a Jack and Jill bath. The master bedroom suite has recessed reading lights, a glass door to a private balcony with Trex decking and his-and-hers closets with organizers. The master bath features a marble floor, double-sink vanity with granite counter, Jacuzzi garden tub, chandelier, ceiling stereo speakers and large shower with a bench.

The three-bay attached, under-house garage includes one bay that is pre-wired for a complete tool shop as well as 110 and 220 volt, a central vacuuming outlet and Internet, cable and telephone lines.
