n Last week, Noelle Mathewson of Danbury asked for
a soft, chocolate cookie recipe with either dates or chocolate chips in it that might be the one her
mom made in the 1950s. Bertha Tiano
sent in this recipe for her to try.
Chocolate Date Bars
1 cup dates, chopped
112 cups boiling water
1 teaspoon baking soda
34 cup vegetable oil
1 cup sugar
134 cups flour
34 teaspoon baking soda
12 teaspoon salt
2 cups semi-sweet chocolate morsels (12 oz.)
14 cup sugar
12 cup chopped nuts
Combine the chopped dates, boiling water and
1 teaspoon baking soda in a small bowl and let stand for a
few minutes. Cream together the vegetable oil and sugar.
Add the eggs and beat well. Add remaining ingredients and the reserved date mixture and mix well. Pour batter into a
13- by 9-inch pan. Combine topping ingredients in a bowl and sprinkle over date mixture. Bake in a 350-degree oven for 35 minutes. Cool. Cut into 1- by 3-inch bars. Makes about 30 bars.
