Four people were injured when a car slammed into a tree at Morningside Drive North and Church Street early Saturday.

The accident took place about 2:30 a.m. Saturday when a Volvo C70 convertible with four occupants struck the tree near the intersection, suffering heavy damage on the driver's side.

Three passengers were out of the car when firefighters arrived, according to the report, but the driver had to be extricated from the wreckage.

Two of the passengers had minor injuries and the third had what firefighters described as a moderate injury. They were treated at the scene by Westport EMS and then taken to the hospital.

The driver had to be extricated from the wreck by firefighters, and then placed on a backboard for transportation to Norwalk Hospital with moderate injury, according to the fire report.

The vehicle was towed from the scene by Westport Center Service.

The cause of the accident is under investigation by police.
