A car fire on the Merritt Parkway at the Westport-Norwalk border Monday night shut down traffic headed home after the Memorial Day holiday.

The blaze erupted in a 1992 Toyota Camry traveling north, just past the highway's Exit 40, shortly after 8 p.m. Monday, according to firefighters.

Both Westport and Norwalk fire departments dispatched two engines and a command car to the scene, and they found the sedan fully involved in flames.

Traffic in both northbound lanes of the parkway was closed for about 15 minutes as the fire was extinguished.

No injuries were reported, and the last fire unit cleared the Parkway at 9:00.
