A busy downtown Wesport parking area was blocked off Wednesday evening as firefighters battled a blaze that consumed one car and damaged another.

When firefighters arrived at Parker Harding Plaza shortly before 6 p.m., they found a 1994 Volkswagen Jetta fully engulfed in flames, while a nearby 2007 Lexus RX350 suffered some damage from the flames as well.

Police blocked both entrances to the plaza as firefighters battled the blaze. Two engines and the shift commander were dispatched to the scene.

A small quantity of gasoline flowed into a storm drain, prompting local officials to notify the state Department of Environmental Protection and Coast Guard. Meanwhile, fire crews used speedy dry and boom material to absorb the gasoline spill.

No injuries were reported by firefighters or anyone else in the parking lot.
