Canterbury girls win New England title

WINDSOR -- The Canterbury School girls basketball team won 20 straight games to finish its season, including a 60-54 triumph over the Holderness School (Plymouth, N.H.) on Sunday in the New England Class C championship game.

The Saints' Clare Fitzpatrick was named the championship game's MVP after scoring 23 points, including a 6-for-7 effort from the foul line. Krista O'Gara added 16 points, including two 3-pointers and a 4-for-4 effort from the foul line. O'Gara sank two clutch baskets in the final minute to help the Saints hold the lead. Canterbury shot 12-for-14 from the foul line in the game.

Canterbury (20-2) also received the New England Class C Sportsmanship Award, which is voted on by the referees throughout the season.

GLASTONBURY -- Scott Rossell had 11 points and Shane Edmond added 10, but it wasn't enough as the Green Wave was bounced from the opening round of the Class LL state tournament.

The Green Wave managed just nine points in the second quarter and found themselves trailing by 15 at halftime.

Jeff Pitkin tallied a game-high 20 points for Glastonbury and Cody Otto added 17.

The Tomahawks will play No. 3 Bridgeport Central in the second round on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Bridgeport.

New Milford finishes the year 12-10 and reached both the South-West Conference and state playoffs.
