The Westport Domestic Violence Task Force will hold a "Healing Wings of Hope" butterfly release event to raise awareness of domestic violence at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, at Earthplace, 10 Woodside Lane.
The group will releases 94 butterflies into their natural environment to represent the number of reported domestic violence incidents in Westport during 2011, according to a release.
The event is a collaborative community event to benefit the Domestic Violence Crisis Center. Butterflies can be sponsored for $10 each.
Domestic violence, a serious crime that affects people of all races, ages, gender and income levels, impacts more than four million Americans each year, the release states.
One in three Americans has witnessed an incident of domestic violence.
First Selectman Gordon Joseloff has proclaimed October 2012 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Westport.
Residents interested in sponsoring a butterfly and participating should contact Elizabeth Juviler, the task force's former chairwoman, at email@example.com.
