The driver, Edward Weller, Jr., of West Haven, and the child, who was on a field trip with a Ridgefield child care center, are listed in stable condition at Danbury Hospital.
The bus apparently hit a boulder after it fell onto the road. Twelve other children escaped, some with minor injuries.
Weller had to be extricated from the bus and may have suffered a few broken bones. A woman who identified herself as his wife refused to offer details of her husband's condition
"He doesn't remember what happened,'' she said.
She confirmed officials' claims that Weller has worked for the state-licensed Children's Corner child care center in Ridgefield for 18 months and has an impeccable driving and safety record.
State Department of Motor Vehicles' records indicate that Weller has the professional licensing credentials required for that job, including a public passenger transportation license and a commercial school bus driver license, said DMV spokesman William Seymour. Weller has no motor vehicle violations on his record, he said.
Hospital and center officials cited the fact that the children were required to wear the bus' state-of-the-art seat belts as preventing them from suffering more serious harm.
