WESTPORT -- Few details about the death of a woman whose body was found floating near the mouth of the Saugatuck River on Friday morning were known by evening.

The woman's body was encountered by a duck hunter in a kayak floating in water not far from the Longshore Club about 9:30 a.m., according to reports.

Police and fire units initially dispatched to the scene, however, relocated to the Saugatuck Harbor Yacht Club on other side of the river, where emergency personnel launched a boat to bring the body back to shore.

Police said the woman's identity would not be released until relatives had been notified.

The circumstances of the death are being investigated by Westport police detectives, and no information regarding how the woman died had been released as of Friday evening.

The woman's body was transported to the office of the state's chief medical examiner in Farmington for an autopsy, police said.
