On your market, get set -- shop!
The Westport Sidewalk Sales got underway Friday, attracting large crowds of bargain hunters to stores in the downtown business district and along the Post Road.
The annual sale, organized by the Westport Downtown Merchants Association, continues Saturday and Sunday.
"I come every year," said Heidi Sylvester of Darien, carrying an armful of clothes Friday morning. "And I'm just getting started."
"I can't wait to get here, do my Christmas shopping, my birthday shopping," she added.
The sale has become a summertime Westport tradition.
"It has been going on as long as I can remember," said Lee De Monico, public relations director with the Downtown Merchants Association. "I remember shopping in the 1970s for bargains."
"Most stores have some sort of sale," she said, "if not on the street, inside. I would guess close to 100 percent."
The association expected thousands of shoppers to comb through the special sales merchandise throughout the weekend.
"People definitely wait for the sidewalk sale," said Molly Robb, and employee of the LF store.
"It's my first time working it," said Callie Thomas at the Papyrus store. "I'm excited."
"We come every year," said Mai Kong of Westport. "It's fun."
