The Friends of Sherwood Island will host a special environmental program Saturday focusing on sea creatures, wildlife and "farming" at the park.

The event will begin at 4 p.m. on the park's East Beach with seining, or net fishing. Nature Center staff and summer interns will drag nets to find out what is living a few feet from shore. Crabs, oysters and other sea life will be examined.

At 4:15 p.m. at the Purple Martin Gourd Complex, bird nests will be brought down for observation and to count the newly hatched fledglings.

Tuttie the Turtle will be introduced to her newly created water habitat inside the Nature Center at 4:25 p.m.

Guest speaker Jang Kim, of the Department of Marine Sciences at the University of Connecticut, will speak at 4:30 p.m. on "Seaweed Farming: A Connecticut Cash Crop, From the Underwater Garden to your Table to Your Toothpaste." The lecture will take place at the Nature Center at the East Beach.

The day's activities are free, but park admission is $13 on weekends for Connecticut residents. Admission is $9 per day on weekdays, and season passes cost $67. The park is open from 8 a.m. to sunset.
