Frankie Bergonzi hopes to take his winning ways on the pitch to the Colgate University's men's soccer team.

"I was drawn to Colgate by its outstanding academics, the professionalism of the Colgate soccer program, and by the coaching staff," Bergonzi said. "I knew it was a great fit."

Before heading to Colgate, Bergonzi was one of three captains for the Staples High School boys soccer team. In his four years at Staples, the Wreckers claimed three FCIAC titles and one state title. He was an integral part of the teams that went on to win championships.

"Winning FCIACs and states is a huge accomplishment on its own, but when you do it for a program like Staples Soccer where there are so many people invested in the program in the community it means a lot more," Bergonzi said.

Winning was a theme for Bergonzi at Staples in the last three years. The Wreckers had a combined record of 63--7--1. Not just winning, though; winning when it counts, during the postseason.

Bergonzi performed at his best in those utmost important games where titles were at stake. His individual performances, which garnered him First Team All-FCIAC honors his senior year, were never able to compare to the camaraderie and teamwork that led to all those wins in the playoffs.

"My most cherished moments were during the postseason. The regular season is always fun, but there's nothing like playing in big games against great opponents. There is no better feeling when it comes all together and you win a championship," Bergonzi said. "We were fortunate enough to win 3 FCIACs and one state during my time at staples, so those would be my most memorable moments."

Bergonzi got their attention through his strong leadership and stellar play, in his four years at Colgate, he hopes to make a big impact and help bring the team to Patriot League championships.

"We have the talent and the pieces on this team to win multiple Patriot League championships and make our way deep into the NCAA tournament," Bergonzi said. "I just love to play the game. I love to compete. My motivation for playing the game is based a lot on the fact that I love to compete and play hard. And I think when you play hard and give it everything you have, the results will come."
