Danbury, senior HIGHLIGHTS: Had a breakout season this winter ... FCIAC champion ... Class LL champion ... Won the State Open for the first time ... Finished 3rd in the New England tournament ... Had plenty of talent last year, but was physically small, so he hit the weights and gained the strength to succeed this winter ... "It was just a matter of him gaining confidence." Nick Palermo 112 Bethel, junior HIGHLIGHTS: Finished with a 33-4 record this season ... SWC champion ... Finished second in the Class M tournament ... Had a disappointing postseason by his standards, as he didn't qualify for the New England tournament ... Battled injuries all season long ... Still had a great regular season ... Won the New Milford tournament and the Ridgefield Challenge ... Will wrestle at a significantly higher weight next season ... Comes from a long line of outstanding wrestlers in his family ... Finished sixth in the New England tournament in 2003 ... Went undefeated in the regular season and blew through the postseason ... SWC champion ... Class LL champion ... State open champion ... Advanced to the semifinals of the New England tournament before taking sixth place ... Was the best overall wrestler in the SWC this season ... Led the Green Wave to a sweep of the regular-season and tournament crowns ... Wrestled his best in big matches ... Dominated Weston/Barlow's Max Meiselin the Class LL final ... Defeated Bethel's Kris Lance in a defining dual-meet win over the Wildcats ... Also one of the best football players in the SWC. Nick Weyer 130 Danbury, junior HIGHLIGHTS: It doesn't matter what weight Weyer wrestles at, he just keeps winning ... Took home his third FCIAC crown this season ... Class LL champion ... State Open champion ... Accomplished this with a partially torn ACL in his left knee ... Was 36-6 on the season ... Broke onto the scene two years ago as a freshman with a title in the 103-pound class ... One of those guys who can put on weight yet still be effective ... One of the team leaders for Danbury this season ... Has an infectious personality ... Placed first in the Danbury Holiday tournament and second in the Tournament of Champions. Kyle Rodgers 135 Danbury, sophomore HIGHLIGHTS: Won his first FCIAC championship this season ... Finished second in the Danbury Holiday Tournament and in the Tournament of Champions ... Placed fifth in the Class LL tournament, just missing the cut for his first State Open ... Compiled a 36-9 record this season ... Is poised to be an even bigger force next season. Shane Yachulke 135 New Fairfield, freshman HIGHLIGHTS: Came out of nowhere to win the SWC title this season ... Compiled a 28-13 record during the regular season ... Was coach Bob Serrano's most improved wrestler over the course of the season ... "He gained confidence as the season wore on," Serrano said. "Most of his losses came early on in the season." ... Peaked at the end of the season ... Very tenacious on the mat despite his youth. Bobby James 140 New Fairfield, junior HIGHLIGHTS: SWC champion ... Was a great asset to the Rebels, as they almost won the SWC tournament team title ... Moved to Florida last summer and moved back to New Fairfield in the middle of the season ... 22-4 during the shortened regular season ... Class M runner-up ... Serrano calls James the best athlete he's ever coached. Scott Ivan 145 Bethel, junior HIGHLIGHTS: Filled nicely the hole in Bethel's lineup created by the departure of Doug Milburn ... SWC champion ... Finished fourth in the Class M tournament ... Compiled a 25-7 record on the season ... "I'm looking forward to Scott taking on more of a leadership role next season," Bethel coach Bob Owen said. Jeff Marra 145 Danbury, junior HIGHLIGHTS: FCIAC champion for the third time ... Class LL champion for the second time ... Placed second in the State Open ... Placed fourth and advanced to the semifinals of the New England tournament ... Is one of the toughest matchups in the state ... Compiled a 45-6 record on the season ... Won the Tournament of Champions ... His ability to move on the mat produces tons of points, while his strength and technical skill leads to a lot of pins. Chris Goodspeed 152 Bethel, junior HIGHLIGHTS: Bethel's most improved wrestler over the course of the season ... SWC champion for the first time ... Placed fourth in the Class M tournament ... Advanced to his first State Open this season ... Finished with a 28-8 record on the year ... "He's worked very hard for us over the course of the season," Bethel coach Bob Owen said. Will Esposito 152 Danbury, junior HIGHLIGHTS: FCIAC champion ... Class LL champion ... Placed third in the state open ... Finished with a 42-8 record this season ... Very tall for a wrestler ... Also extremely powerful ... Finished third in the Redskin Invitational ... Placed second in the Tournament of Champions. Ryan Quinn 160 New Fairfield, junior HIGHLIGHTS: Had a great postseason for the Rebels ... SWC champion ... Beat New Milford's Pat Knight in the SWC championship match after being pinned by Knight in the regular season ... Finished second in the Class M tournament ... Finished second in the State Open ... Finished 45-10 on the season ... One of the strongest wrestlers in the area ... A weightlifting buff ... Couples that with good balance. Matt Tricarico 171 --photo2R-- Danbury, junior HIGHLIGHTS: Danbury's best wrestler, and maybe the best wrestler in the state ... Sat out the FCIAC tournament with a shoulder injury ... Class LL champion ... State Open champion ... Finished second in the New England tournament ... Finished with a 41-4 record this season ... Two of those losses were to Westhill's Charles Cycon ... Avenged the losses to Cycon in the Class LL tournament ... A beast on the mat ... A great athlete with superior balance ... Can score plenty of points ... Finished first in the Danbury Holiday Tournament Eric Sellers 171 Ridgefield, senior HIGHLIGHTS: 41-11 on the season ... Finished third in the Class LL tournament ... Placed fourth in the State Open ... Won two matches in the New England tournament ... Did all of this in the toughest weight class in the state ... Placed fourth in the FCIAC tournament ... Won the Ridgefield Challenge this season and was named the outstanding wrestler in that tournament ... Placed first in the Berlin Tournament ... A very crafty wrestler ... Has only been wrestling for three seasons. Doug Sutherland 189 Brookfield, junior HIGHLIGHTS: An Academic All-State selection this season ... SWC champion for the first time ... Has a 4.3 GPA ... Posted a 32-6 record this year with 12 pins ... Finished sixth in the Class M tournament ... Captain of the football team. Edmund Brietling 189 Newtown, senior HIGHLIGHTS: Placed fourth in Class LL ... Notched a 25-5 record with 16 pins ... Second in the SWC ... Won the trophy for the fastest pin in the Class LL tournament ... Qualified for the State Open for the first time ... Team captain ... Finished second in the Guilford tournament ... Was counted on by the Nighthawks for a win in every dual meet ... Very strong ... A great competitor ... Pinned his way to the final in the SWC tournament ... Every win in the Class LL tournament came by pin ... Led team to a 14-12 record. Chase DeCarlo 215 Danbury, junior HIGHLIGHTS: A greatly improved wrestler for coach Ricky Shook over the course of the season ... 23-13 on the year ... FCIAC champion ... Finished first in the Danbury Holiday Tournament. Timmy Ferreira 275 Danbury, senior HIGHLIGHTS: Had a great postseason ... 45-6 on the year ... FCIAC champion ... Class LL champion ... State Open champion ... Finished fifth in the New England tournament ... an absolute mountain on the mat ... Really had a standout senior season ... Is an outstanding leader off the mat. COACH OF THE YEAR Ricky Shook Danbury HIGHLIGHTS: Led the Hatters to a fourth consecutive State Open title and was named the Coach of the Year in Connecticut ... Danbury won an unprecedented 18th consecutive FCIAC championship ... The Hatters also finished third in the New England tournament for their first top-three finish in more than a decade ... Shook, a former Hatter wrestler, flawlessly handles this team and successfully manages many different personalities on his team ... His team has performed a nearly impossible task - they've made winning seem like a right.
