The ALS Association's Connecticut chapter will hold The Westport Walk to Defeat ALS fundraiser Sunday, Oct. 16, at Sherwood Island State Park. Check-in and walk-up registration will begin 10 a.m., followed by the start of the roughly 3-mile walk 11 a.m. at the park's main pavilion.

The Bridgeport parade corps Park City Pride will perform prior to a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Volvo of Westport, the event's pace car sponsor, will lead off the walk in one of their vehicles. State Sen. Bob Duff will also be at the event, emceed by Amelie Wilson of News 12.

The walk will be held to raise funds for research to combat ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease.

The chapter provides free services to ALS patients and their families, including loan of medical equipment, transportation programs and support groups.
